from The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

by

MARK TWAIN

About the story:

Huckleberry Finn can be read and studied on several levels. Even if it is thought of as merely the tale of an uneducated, but crafty, Mississippi River boy who runs away and aids a black slave to do the same, it is full of rich description, colorful dialect, and exciting action.

In this section, Huck describes a visit to a rustic river town, and a shooting that provokes the townsfolk into forming a lynch mob. High adventure for any young lad, to be sure, but Huck—and the reader—are also privileged to see one man stand up to the mob and denounce them for what they are. Here we see Twain’s contempt for cowards in general and the all-too-common vigilantes of the day in particular.

Perhaps your child has seen someone incite a group to take an action that the leader has not the courage to take alone. Or, perhaps your child may recall this tale when a similar situation happens in the future.
